K9 Police Capers

Established in just 2018, Taichung Police K9 Unit is only the second such unit in Taiwan and half of its officers come from the elite SWAT team. Despite the serious nature of duties undertaken by K9 police units - from seizing drugs and apprehending vicious criminals to detecting bombs - dog handlers look upon their pooches as a real labor of love.

In this episode, we discover what gustatory advantages are derived from having a female police captain; why K9 officers often frequent the kennels with tasty tidbits even on their days off; and how despite all the crack training, when off-duty K9 pooches meet civilian mutts, tempers still sometimes flair.

Chen Yu-mei: With all the time we spend together we're just like a big family. We have a deep bond. I remember when I first arrived my colleague told me that in the process of training with the dogs they got injured. I was a bundle of nerves. I was worried that it might be serious. We're just like family. If they have any issues they always share them with me.

Lin Wei-bin: She loves playing with this thing. She's already high and excited. She's biting beautifully. At this point, I take it away. We don't play until she's exhausted or until she doesn't want it.

Zhang Wei-kun: But the disadvantage of giving him a toy is that he gets more hyper. He's just like a kid. I tell him that he needs to finish his work before he gets a toy.

Huang Sheng-zhe: You simply need to train your dog. But the process of properly training a dog requires us to attend to all the dog's daily needs. So there's no time to sit about idle during the day.

Lin Guang: Because I'm interacting with it. If it…Because we want dogs to bite things and wait for the order before letting it go. Otherwise, it's trained to bite and not let go of the thing.

Xiao Wan-rong: She used to go berserk at the sight of a dog. Just like a moment ago. She's come on leaps and bounds. She needs to come out more and socialize. More contact with people and dogs. She's more balanced now.

Janet: I'm looking forward to stroking the dogs most. The K9 unit officers are very witty. Everyone is so happy and love to tell jokes. I think that's really adorable.
